At Brooks Haven Homestead, we are a small, family-based breeding program. We specialize in taking a holistic approach to raising our dogs.
We have had many dogs as parts of our family who we loved dearly. We have finally learned, that because we didn’t pay the price, we paid the price. Our “affordable” dogs had health and temperament issues that cost us in veterinary care and behavioralist support in the long run costing not only more money to us, but also unnecessary stress for the dogs. Nobody likes to see their loved ones suffer. One dog had severe allergies and very bad teeth. His skin would look inflamed and he would constantly itch. We made countless attempts at finding food to fix the issue, and while some changes and treatments worked temporarily, the problem lasted throughout his life. Another dog had signs of joint discomfort from the time she was a year old, which were irreversible and lasted throughout her life. We have also dealt with unpredictable temperaments and dog aggression, sometimes, in some dogs, on some occasions. This made management of this dog very challenging, and we had to stay on high alert whenever taking her out.
This knowledge led us to the path of seeking out an “ethical breeder,” for our next 4-legged companion. We wanted to buy from a breeder who did not continue to breed poor qualities, but strived to enhance the predictability of health and temperament in their dogs. That said, we noticed that even wonderful, honest breeders can have a lot of variation between programs and we couldn’t find one who checked all the boxes of our expectations, so we decided to build the breeding program we couldn't find.
Our Breeding Program- Built on a Foundation of Integrity
Brooks Haven Homestead is located in Central Oregon- with dogs in homes (ours and guardians) in surrounding areas of Bend, Sisters, La Pine, and Crooked River Ranch.
Dedicated to a Holistic Approach
We have a deep respect for the importance of preventative health practices including foundational nutrition- exposure to raw as well as carefully selected dehydrated dog food, supportive natural treatments, and pre-screening for genetic health dispositions prior to breeding. We follow a limited vaccine protocol. We value the gifts given by the Earth and use natural healthcare as a preventative and first line of defense, when safe to do so, in order to reduce the toxic burden on our dogs and puppies.

Our breeding dogs are first and foremost beloved family members. Each dog is thoughtfully raised, temperamentally observed, and cared for with their long-term well-being in mind. Puppies go through Early Neurological Stimulation and Early Scent Detection to help assimilate them into family life.
The Homestead Raised Difference
Our homestead lifestyle supports how we raise our dogs — with indoor and outdoor time, daily interaction, enrichment, and integration into real life. They are also exposed to the other homestead animals. Puppies are gently introduced to household rhythms, people, and environments, helping them grow into confident, adaptable companions.
Puppy Placement Essentials
We don’t believe in marriage based on on photo, just as we do not believe that you should start a relationship with a dog based on one photo. We perform structured temperament analysis around 5 weeks old, so the puppy’s individuality can be used to help it find the perfect family, and helping the family find the perfect puppy for their lifestyle.
